Reviewer Guide

Thank you for reviewing Searching for Wonder: Teaching Literature with Student-Selected Texts. Please take a moment to read through this project summary to familiarize yourself with the book’s purpose and audience before beginning your review.

As we strive to work openly, we plan to include feedback on this book with readers of the published book, which will be licensed under a CC BY 4.0 International License. If you give permission (in the review form), your name will be mentioned in the published version of the book as a reviewer. If you provide feedback but do not give permission for us to share your name, your reviewer feedback will be delivered to the author anonymously and will inform revisions, but your name will not be included.

About the Book

Searching for Wonder was written as a guide for those interested in teaching literature with student-selected texts. The first section of the book, “How Does This Work?” is written for teachers, while the assignments and glossaries are written for students.

A draft of this book has been made available on the UNewHaven Pressbooks network for this peer review process. It will be revised for its official launch in summer 2025. The University of New Haven Press, managed by Lauren Slingluff and Amber Montano at the Marvin K Peterson Library, is coordinating this peer-review process.

Your Review

We are seeking reviews from teachers of literature interested in considering how the strategies described in this book might work in their courses. There is no compensation for reviews, but you will be named as a reviewer in the next version of the published book (if you give permission on the review form).

This book was designed for use in undergraduate literature courses, but we are very eager to hear from teachers at the secondary and graduate level as well.

When reviewing, we ask you to consider:

  • Pedagogy (based on your experience, what kind of learning do the strategies, assignments, and glossaries in this book make possible in the literature classroom?),
  • Appropriateness for Curriculum (based on your experience, how well can you accomplish the goals of the literature courses you teach with the strategies and assignments included in this book?),
  • Approach to Literature (How does the book’s approach to literature complement or complicate the way you typically teach literature?),
  • Consistency (Is the text internally consistent in terms of terminology and framework?), and
  • Organization/Structure/Flow (are the topics in the text presented in a logical, clear fashion?).

Please avoid using abbreviations or short forms of words when providing feedback. Doing so ensures that your feedback remains clear and easy for everyone to understand.

Next Steps

For inclusion in the next published version of the book, reviews are due by June 1, 2025.

When you are ready to review the book,

Please share this review opportunity with your colleagues who teach literature. This review guide can be found in the frontmatter of the draft book or in this Google Doc.

If you run into any issues during this process, please contact Amber Montano at amontano@newhaven.edu.
